genus quoddam Nobilium apud Germanos, Meyer: ortum a Maioribus villicis, qui ab initio ex plebe erant, postmodum, cum a dominis suis praedia in beneficium, sivefeudum accepissent, Nobilitatem sibi vindicare coeperunt. Temporum dein fluxu, ii Maiores, i. e. villici vocati sunt, qui servinon essent, sed praedia colenda certâ mercede conduxissent, suô nomine Coloni dicti.
